by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us… look to Jesus.” Tell them that they are going to hear a Bible Story again today that shows how God works through Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, Daniel's three friends. They lived during the time of exile.. when the people of Israel had been taken away from the Promised Land because of their sinfulness. God works through these men to show that God is the almighty, the King of kings.


5) Bible Story: Today’s Story is about Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. Read pages 212-216 from the Read and Learn Bible (Scholastic).



6) Today's Text: “Blessed be the LORD… for there is no other god who is able to deliver in this way” Daniel 3: 28a &29b



7) Craft:

• The Fiery Furnace…Before the lesson, photocopy template pieces for all the children (you may want to attach our text to the bottom of the main template right away). Cut and paste to assemble the scene. You can have the children make flames in several ways: 1) glue on torn stripped of red, orange and yellow construction paper 2) paint (you could do this with brushes or chunks of sponge in clothes pins) 3) glue on crumpled balls of red, orange and yellow tissue paper

Unit 1: Lesson 24 DANIEL

3) Prayer...Thank God that he delivers us from sin and death, just like he delivered Daniel from the lion's den.

4) Theme: Remind the children of the theme of the unit: God works among his covenant people to prepare the world for the Savior. Hebrews 12:1&2 “Therefore, since we are surrounded
by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us… look to Jesus.” Tell them that they are going to hear a Bible Story again today that shows how God works through Daniel. Daniel lived during the time of exile.. when the people of Israel had been taken away from the Promised Land because of their sinfulness. God works through Daniel and his friends to show the power and majesty of God to both the Israelites and their rulers.

7) Craft:

• Daniel in the Lion’s Den… there are many variations of the “lion” craft available. The idea is that the children all make a lion and you make a puppet of Daniel (picture colored, backed with heavy paper and on a popsicle stick) so that you can help them visualize what it must have been like to be Daniel surrounded by all those hungry lions. And God delivered him!
  Here are several lion variations:
• Macaroni Lion: Provide each child with a basic lion face template. Have them color the lion’s face with crayons or markers and make the lion’s mane with glued on macaroni noodles (dyed brown if you like… noodles are easily dyed with a solution of rubbing alcohol and food coloring but need time to dry so you would have to do this ahead of time.) This picture will be heavy so is best mounted on a sheet of construction paper on which you could glue the text, too.

I like this lion template because the basic shapes are very simple. You could even draw these shapes directly onto the construction paper yourself. If you want to keep it simple, ignore all the other facial details.

• Yarn Lion: Same idea, except have the children glue on snips of brown/black/yellow yarn for the mane.
• Paper Curl Lion: Same idea, except have the children glue on paper curls for the mane make of thin strips of brown construction paper curled with scissors

• Lion Puppet.. using the same template (print it small enough that you have two per page and cut out before the lesson), give each child one lion face to color. Print and cut out the lion's body and let the kids color that too. Glue the face onto the bottom flap of a paper bag. Glue the body onto the front.

• Paper Plate Lion…use a paper plate for the lions head. Plates can be colored or painted yellow/orange. Provide children with triangles for ears/nose/mouth, circles for eyes so that they can make a face. You can make the mane by gluing on yarn or paper curls to the outside of the plate. If you have two sizes of plates, you could use the small plate for the head and the large plate for the body (staple securely together) and provide rectangles for legs and a long strip for a tail.

Elijah was a regular man who made mistakes, who was afraid sometimes, yet when it really mattered he trusted God. Elijah did amazing things with God's help and God did amazing things for Elijah and always took care of him


5) Bible Story: Today’s Story is about Elijah. Read pages 180-185 from the Read and Learn Bible (Scholastic).


6) Text: Today’s Text is: "Answer me, O Lord... so that these people will know that you ... are God. " 1 Kings18:37

7) Craft:

• Pop-Up Altars: Have children decorate the outside of a paper cup (foam will work, but it's more difficult to color. Experiment at home to find out what coloring tools work best with the cups you have) to look like stones. You can also cut circles of grey/brown paper and have the children glue the stones on the cups. Poke a craft stick through the bottom of each cup. Have the children glue strips of yellow/red/orange tissue paper to the end of the craft stick that is inside the cup. Show the children how to pull the tissue paper flames so that they are inside the cup, and then push the stick up to make the flames appear. If you have time, retell the story using the felt board and have the children demonstrate the altar bursting into flame with their pop-up altars while you are telling the story.
• Tissue Paper Flames... print out a picture of Elijah and the altar for each child. Allow them some time to color the picture with crayons first. Then, pass out paint in red/yellow/orange and have the children cover the altar with flames. If you don't have paint, provide strips of tissue paper and diluted white glue and allow the children to paint the glue on the picture and add lots of tissue paper.

7) Craft:

• Handprint Ravens: Print out and photocopy template (prior to lesson) see: http://www.dltk-kids.com/animals/mhandprintcrow.htm. Have the children color the template pieces. Cut out the template pieces. Trace the child's hands on another piece of paper and cut out (two handprints) -- black construction paper works well. Glue the raven together: glue the head (circle) to the body (upside down teardrop shape); glue the face onto the head; glue the tuft of feathers to the top of the head; glue the tail to the back of the body; glue the feet onto the bottom of the body; glue the handprint wings on the back of the body; glue the flower on a wing or beside the neck. To save some time, you should have the body and the head cut out of black construction paper prior to the lesson.
  Materials needed: template, black construction paper, crayons, scissors, glue

God told Solomon to ask for whatever he wanted and Solomon asked for wisdom. God made him wiser than anyone who had ever lived and used Solomon’s wisdom to bless the people of Israel.

5) Bible Story: Today’s Story is about Solomon. Read pages 168-173 from the Read and Learn Bible (Scholastic).

6) Text: Today’s Text is: Solomon prayed to God, “Give thy servant therefore an
understanding mind to govern thy people, that I may discern between good and evil.” I Kings 3:9a

7) Craft:

• Wisdom scroll… Before the lesson, print out a selection of Solomon’s proverbs on a sheet of paper. Copy for each child. Trim the pages so that they are just slightly shorter than the length of a new pencil. At craft time, have the children wrinkle their pages gentle and dip them in a strong tea solution to make them look old. Set them out to dry (you may use a hair dryer to speed the process. When dry, tape each end securely around a new unsharpened pencil and have the children roll the two ends around the pencils until they meet in the middle. Now they have their own ancient scroll of wisdom!
  
• Walking in God's Ways... use washable poster paint to paint each child's foot on a large paper plate or a sheet of heavier poster paper. Print along the top: Let us walk in the ways of the Lord. If you use a paper plate, you can loop a string around the top so that it can be hung!
